Murtada Al Rawas: Political differences storm Iranian economy

Exclusive report by Murtada Al Rawas-Iran.

In the wake of external and internal pressures on Iran, economy is living under tensions and clear fluctuations which is embodied in the differences between the parliament and the government over governmental procedures, the latest of them was cancelling the governmental subsidies for staples which increased the prices and hindered local production, more details in the following report.“The biggest economy plan since decades”, this is a slogan carried by the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad late 2010 to start the first stage of cancelling subsidies from staples. But what Iran is witnessing two years after applying the law is clear deterioration for the currency with inflation rates reaching to 25% including all major and basic items as Iranians are the first to notice the increased prices for the items they need for daily life. Mahmoud Ashrafi-Governmental employee.

For staples which we need every day, we are forced to buy them, but what I want to say is that I was dedicating one third of my salary to buy these items but today I need to pay two thirds of it. Hania-Governmental employee. People here have to rationalize consumption of basic items and they need to buy the cheaper items and to give up buying the expensive items, in the end we hope for the sanctions to be left.A governmental attempt of reducing the subsidies for foodstuff and fuel to save billions of dollars to be given as grants for the poorest families, but this law was negatively reflected on Iran internally and that pushed 179 Majlis members to sign the law that stops the second stage of subsidies law fearing that the situation and living conditions be more difficult for citizens. Ali reda Mahjoub-Majlis member from Tehran. I didn’t vote for stage one of the law because it increased prices and harmed the local production and many other problems were caused by cancelling subsidies for staples along with mismanagement for this law and the government’s efforts to solve these issues all failed.Suleiman Abbasi-Majlis member from Kenbed.

The issue needs a session between the Majlis and the government to discuss the details of this law, but currently and according to the results of stage one, we decided to suspend stage two of the law.The argument remains between the parliament and the government while the Iranian citizen remains stuck amidst this argument with hopes for the aggravating problems to be solved.
